The kitchen is pretty apparent. At kitchen counters and places where there can be a lot of foot traffic but not enough floor spaces, barstools tuck in neatly and clear up all the room that is needed. A den, too, is often crowded. Using a counter height table with barstools (or adjustable barstools), the space problem is easily solved.
The barstool has its origins in the taverns of Europe. These places of celebration were often densely packed; pub owners wanted to maximize their customer capacity, and drinkers did not have the same need for space and privacy as formal diners. In taverns, drinkers would sit close together at a long table or bar, socializing informally at their barstools, and occasionally falling off.
